A FOOTBALL coach was caught drink-driving after having a tipple on his way home from a game.

Anthony Smith, 43, was caught behind the wheel of his Audi A4, in the early hours of March 8, Sunderland magistrates heard.

I was in the wrong and embarrassingly so.

Prosecutor Lee Poppett said police had cause to speak to Smith after they spotted him on the A182 Hetton Road at 2am. A roadside breath test showed he had 56 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit being 35.

He was of previous good character, the court heard. Smith, of Lady Street, Hetton, admitted drink driving. He was banned from driving for a year and told to pay a £200 fine, £85 costs and a £20 surcharge.
