A MAN is back on bail as he waits to hear if he will be jailed for exposing himself to teenage girls making their way to school.

At a hearing at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court, the 33-year-old was told he must wait another three weeks to find out if he will be jailed, after pleading guilty at a previous hearing to exposing himself on two separate occasions.

Stephen Mewes, known locally as “Stevo Paedo,” would wait around in undergrowth in Sulgrave Park, Washington, targeting teenagers.

On one occasion, two 15-year-old girls spotted the man, said to suffer from learning difficulties, appearing to urinate and make noises.

In court on Friday, defence solicitor Ian Jordan said Mewes had been taken to Northgate Hospital, near Morpeth, for assessment under the Mental Health Act since his trial three weeks ago.

Mr Jordan said: “Since being bailed, Mr Mewes has not engaged in any improper conduct at all, or breached any of his bail conditions.”

Magistrates granted Mewes bail to an undisclosed address. The next hearing will take place on November 26.
