A FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Sunderland boy was due to appear in court today charged with sexually assaulting two 12-year-old girls.

The girls were near Downhill Sports Complex when the alleged attack took place.

The assaults were reported to police who then arrested a teenage boy.

The 15-year-old was charged late last night with the offences after he had spent time being quizzed by specialist officers.

The incident is alleged to have taken place on Friday night.

The girls have both been spoken to by specialist detectives.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to appear before Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

Reports of the assault have shocked residents, who regularly use the land near the sports complex to walk their dogs.

Brian Smiles, 62, of Red House, said: “There are a lot of kids that hang around here in the evenings and at weekends drinking and messing about.

“I have two granddaughters that are about that age and it’s horrifying to think of anything like this.”
