A MUM-of-three caught stealing clothes was found to have drugs on her.

Stacey Carolan was arrested on a bus after shoplifting from Store 21 in Blandford Street, Sunderland.

The 34-year-old was searched by police and was found to have small amounts of cannabis and amphetamine on her.

Carolan, of St John’s Vale, Pennywell, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to theft and possession of two class B drugs at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

Magistrates ordered Carolan pay £40 court costs and a £20 victim surcharge for the two offences of theft.

Prosecutor Stan Sudworth said the theft of tops worth £15.98 on May 14 was witnessed by a shop worker.

Police were told and she was arrested.

Carolan admitted to officers that the drugs were hers but said she had not gone into the shop with the intention of stealing and had £80 on her at the time.

Philipa Wylie, defending her, said the theft was of low value and the clothes had been recovered.

She said: “There was nothing sophisticated about this operation. She has been spotted immediately on entering the store and has been followed on CCTV footage.

“She accepts when she was leaving the store, the coat hangers were sticking out of her bag.

“She told the police it was some time since she had used any of the drugs and she had forgotten they were there.”
