THIEVES have been smashing their way into cars to snatch valuables left on display.
Police have today issued a plea to motorists after a spate of thefts, in particular in Pennywell, where cars have been broken into after mobile phones, laptops and MP3 players have been left on show.
Officers are carrying out inquiries but are urging Wearsiders to play their part in locking out thieves.
Inspector Dave Pickett said: “There are a number of measures motorists can take to help stop themselves from being broken into.
“Most thieves are opportunist and are more likely to break into a car that has valuables on display that are easy to steal than a car where the owner has hidden away valuable items or taken them out of the car.
“It only takes a few moments and could save the owner a lot of expense and inconvenience.
“If anyone has any information about car thefts, we’d urge them to contact us.
“Information we receive from our communities is vital and can play a huge part in apprehending those responsible.”
Anyone with information is asked to phone police on 101 ex 69191 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
