A SON punched his mother as she lay in bed.

Ryan Allsop attacked the terrified woman after she allowed him to move back into the family home.

He had been kicked out after nearly five years of problems, which she blamed on his drug use and drinking.

But the 24-year-old, whose address was given in court as Athol Road, Sunderland, repaid her kindness by being violent and abusive.

Sunderland Magistrates’ Court heard that Anita Allsop was in bed on the evening of August 29.

She had already clashed with her son about noise from his TV, when he came into her bedroom looking for medication he takes for depression and back pain.

Jeanette Smith, prosecuting, said: “He had already taken it, so there was another argument about that.

“He lifted up the side of the mattress and tried to roll her out of bed.”

Climbing on the bed, Allsop began punching his mother around her head and shoulders.

Defence solicitor Gerry Armstrong asked magistrates to look at a Probation Service report.

Chairman Christopher Hutchinson sentenced Allsop to complete an 18-month community order and imposed a 16-month restraining order banning him from causing his mother “harassment, alarm or distress”.
