A MAN accused of slashing his mother’s face “declined” to appear before a judge yesterday.

Steven Hanson was due before Newcastle Crown Court – via videolink to HMP Durham – over the alleged attack in Ashbrooke, Sunderland on May 31. The 21-year-old faces one charge of wounding with intent on Michelle Hanson, 38.

During the hearing yesterday, prosecutor Emma Dowling told the court: “I understand he has declined to leave his cell at Durham.”

In Hanson’s absence a trial date was listed for week commencing September 9.

A plea and directions hearing will take place in August.

Hanson, of no fixed address, remains remanded in custody.
