Six men from Sunderland and South Shields arrested in connection with historic sex offence claims
Six men have been arrested in South Tyneside and Sunderland by police probing allegations of historic sex offences against at least one woman.
The men, aged 41 to 55, were held and quizzed last week by detectives investigating claims of alleged crimes which could date back decades.
Two people are believed to have been detained at addresses in central South Shields and four others in Sunderland.
Northumbria Police confirmed the arrests and said inquiries were ongoing, but would not give further details of its investigation into the claims.
A spokesman said: “We can confirm six men, aged between 41 and 55, have been arrested in South Tyneside and Sunderland in relation to an ongoing investigation into historic sexual offences.
“They have all since been released on bail or under investigation pending further enquiries.”
It is understood that a house in South Shields was searched by police as part of the probe.
