WARNING messages are appearing across Durham City to remind shoplifters they are being watched, as police patrols are stepped-up on the run up to Christmas.
The action follows a successful start to a campaign to reduce crime in the popular shopping destination, which has seen nearly 40 people arrested in the last month.
Plain-clothed and uniformed patrols will in the city throughout December and signs will be put up warning thieves they are being watched.
PC Mark Garfoot said: “We know that retail crime increases before Christmas when the city centre is at its busiest.
“Our plan is straight forward; we are doing everything possible to make Durham a no-go area for criminals this Christmas.”
