A SHOPLIFTER stole two bottles of perfume from a Sunderland department store.

Matthew Gray took the Emporio Armani from Debenhams on June 17.

Gray, 22, of Toward Road, pleaded guilty to theft at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutor Sarah Guest said he was seen by a security guard, who held him until police arrived.

She added: “He said in his interview, he went in intending to do that, because he had no money for gas or electricity.

“He knew he was being watched by the security, but he was desperate.

“He pulled off the security tags and put them down his trousers.

“He said he would have got £20 each for the items if he had not been detained.”

Magistrates adjourned the case so a report could be prepared.
