A SHOPLIFTER who stole designer clothing from a sports store has been jailed.

Peter Thorpe made off with eight jumpers, worth £320, from JD Sports at The Galleries, Washington, on December 15 last year.

The 21-year old carried out the thefts with an accomplice, whom he refused to name.

Thorpe, of George Street, Birtley, was arrested after being recognised by a member of the public.

He pleaded guilty to theft.

The court heard Thorpe, who has a long-term drug habit, is currently serving an eight-week sentence behind bars which was imposed by Sunderland magistrates for a separate shoplifting offence.

Mr Recorder Graeme Hyland sentenced him to four weeks’ imprisonment yesterday, to run alongside the jail term that he is already serving.

Glen Gatland, defending, said Thorpe is using his time behind bars to beat his addiction for good.
