SCAMMERS attempted to trick an elderly woman out of cash in a phone sting.
The Seaham woman received a call yesterday to say she had won money, but that in order to receive it, she would need to take personal documents, including a passport, to a bank in the company of a courier.
There, she would need to withdraw £270 to release the cash.
After agreeing, she put down the phone and alerted police.
A Durham Constabulary spokesman said: “Scammers will say anything to cheat people out of money.
“Their approach is very friendly and familiar calling you by your first name, making small talk and asking about your family.
“Please be aware and make your friends and family aware these people are rogues and need to be avoided.”
