TWO roofers who claimed to be self-employed scammed thousands of pounds in benefits, a court heard.

An investigation by Sunderland City Council and the Department for Work and Pensions found that Gary Taylor, 33, of Ranson Street, Barnes, had wrongly claimed £12,000; and David Anthony Metcalf, 29, of Aldwych Square, Farringdon, £7,000.

Taylor admitted three charges of failing to promptly report a change of circumstance when he appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

He was given a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, plus 100 hours’ unpaid work and £500 court costs.

Metcalf pleaded guilty to two identical charges, and received an 18-month community order with supervision and £100 costs.

Steps are being taken to recover the overpaid benefits.
