A MAN was kicked and punched to the floor before being robbed in an early-morning attack.

The 20-year-old was walking along Blanford Street in Sunderland city centre in the early hours of Sunday morning when his attacker came at him from behind.

The man launched into a vicious attack, kicking and punching his victim to the floor.

He then stole the man’s mobile phone before fleeing the scene.

The victim was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where he was treated for minor facial injuries.

Police have launched an investigation and are today urging witnesses to come forward.

Acting Neighbourhood Inspector Mick Hall said: “Officers are carrying out extensive inquiries in order to find who is responsible.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area at the time to contact police.

“Any information they may have, no matter how insignificant it seems, could help us.”

The robbery took place on Sunday between about 3.10am and 3.20am.
