The death of a man who fell from the Wearmouth Bridge yesterday has been referred to police watchdog the IPCC.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman confirmed that a report will be prepared for the coroner and the man's death has been referred to the IPCC.
This referral is standard procedure after police contact, she added.
Police were called to the bridge in Sunderland around 3.30pm yesterday after concern was raised for the man.
Officers attempted to speak him, but he subsequently fell from the bridge and sadly died.
