BURGLARS broke into a Sunderland sandwich shop yesterday.

Police received a report at 7.49am, the Subway shop, in Sea Road, Fulwell, had been burgled.

Officers found that overnight, thieves had broken into the shop, and stolen a safe containing cash.

The safe doors were recovered nearby in Roker Park.

Neighbourhood Inspector Tony Carty said: “This happened on Sea Road, which is a busy road even during the night.

“The offenders may have used a Transit van or similar vehicle, and to the public it would have appeared that they were actually doing work at the premises rather than burgling it. Anyone with any information is asked to contact us as soon as possible.”

If anyone saw any suspicious behaviour, they are asked to call police on 101.
