Police warning after Sunderland couple targeted by bank account scam

Have your say

A couple almost lost their savings after falling victim to a bank scam.

The pair from Sunderland had been contacted on the phone by a caller claiming to be from Nationwide and Barclays Bank.

They told the couple there was a problem with their bank accounts and they would be frozen and closed down.

The couple were told to go to the bank and withdraw the cash which would then be picked up later that day.

However, it was only thanks to a vigilant staff member at the bank that the couple did not lose their savings to thieves.

Police were contacted and no money was taken.

Inquiries are ongoing. Officers are warning people to be aware of the scam and to report any calls to the police on 101.
