Police warn of ‘significant danger’ after laser light is aimed at aircraft flying over Sunderland

Have your say

A LASER pen was shone at an aircraft as it flew over the North East.

The green laser is believed to have been beamed into the sky from somewhere in Fence Houses on Tuesday night.

Luckily, it did not affect the pilots and the plane managed to land safely.

Assistant neighbourhood inspector Andy Taylor, who covers Houghton, said: “Anyone shining a laser or light at an aircraft should be aware they’re not only causing significant danger to pilots and passengers, but they’re committing a criminal offence.

“Their actions have the potential to cause a serious incident and put lives at risk.

“Offenders could find themselves spending a considerable amount of time behind bars.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043, ext. 69191.
