A QUICK-THINKING police officer caught a woman as she almost fell to her death.

Police, firefighters and the RNLI were called to Hylton Bridge at 12.35 this morning after the woman threatened to jump from the East side.

By the time crews from North Moor and Washington arrived the woman was on the wrong side of the safety barrier being talked to by Police negotiators.

She then became unconscious and slumped forward where a police officer caught her.

Fire crews then secured the woman on a harness and lifted her to safety before she was taken to South Tyneside Hospital.
