DETECTIVES investigating a New Year’s Day assault that left its victim in hospital with head injuries have arrested a second man.
Police and paramedics were called to the area of the Murco petrol station in Pallion New Road at just after 2am on Thursday, January 1, after reports of a man lying unconscious on the ground nearby.
A 25-year-old man was found at a nearby address and taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment before being transferred to the RVI in Newcastle, where he remains in a stable condition.
Initial inquiries suggested he had become involved in an altercation with a group of four men during which he was assaulted, suffering a significant head injury. Another man with him at the time was also assaulted but only suffered minor injuries.
A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the offence and bailed pending further enquiries.
Another 26-year-old, who was previously been arrested on suspicion of wounding, has also been released on police bail.
Officers are still keen to speak to the man pictured about the assault.
The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition.
