Police investigating rape of man in Washington make arrest

Detectives investigating a rape in Washington have made an arrest.

The incident is said to have happened at around 11pm on Monday, October 6, near the wooden climbing wall in Glebe Park off Abbey Road.

The man, who is in his 20s, was approached by an unknown man.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Officers have arrested a man in connection with this incident and he is currently in police custody helping with enquiries”.

Officers have been carrying out enquiries into the incident and asked anyone who has any information to contact them and extra officers are in the area carrying out patrols.

Detective Inspector Dave English, said: “We’re carrying out enquiries into the incident and asking anyone who may have information, whether they were in or around the park on Monday night or know who is responsible, to get in contact.

“This was a distressing incident for the victim and specially trained officers will be offering him support throughout out the process.

“We understand the local community may be concerned and extra officers will be in the area carrying out patrols to offer reassurance.”
