POLICE dogs and a helicopter joined in a fruitless search for a driver whose car was found abandoned in Sunderland after being pursued by officers.

The Ford Focus drove off when police signalled for it to stop in West Park yesterday morning. It was later found abandoned.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At 10.53am yesterday, officers signalled for a Ford Focus to stop in the West Park area of Sunderland.

“The car failed to stop and officers safely followed it a short distance before losing it.

“The Ford Focus was then found by police abandoned in Thorndale Road.

“A search was carried out to try and locate the driver and inquiries are ongoing.”
