Police cordon remains round scene of New Year's Day assault as three men appear in court over attack

Three men have appeared in court to face charges of assault after a New Year’s Day attack which has left another in a critical condition in hospital.

Durham Constabulary confirmed today, Wednesday, January 6, it had charged three men with grievous bodily harm in connection with the suspected assault.

They were each given conditional bail and told their next appearance will be before Durham Crown Court, on Monday, February 8, with no pleas taken during today’s hearing.

Meanwhile a number of police vehicles remained in the street, with a cordon in place at the rear of one home and the door panel damaged at the front of the property.

Durham Constabulary had said that while there was nothing to suggest a risk to the wider community, residents would see a presence in the area as the investigation continues.

The attack is being investigated by the force’s Major Crime Team.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Thubron, who is leading inquiries, said: “This was an extremely quick but violent assault targeted at the victim.”

Anybody with information can contact the Major Crime Team on 101 quoting incident number 224 of January 1.
