THIEVES are risking a brush with the law by shaving off the takings from hairdressers and barbers across Wearside.

Police are urging business owners to be on the lookout after a series of break-ins at the salons.

Since the start of the year, raiders have targeted four different hairdressers.

The first happened between 6.30pm, on Saturday, January 4 and 10.15am, on Sunday, January 5, at Hair and Beauty, on Windsor Terrace.

Offenders smashed a window at the property, however nothing was stolen.

Between 6pm, on Wednesday, January 29 and 9am, on Thursday, January 30, thieves broke into Sam’s Barbers, on Eden House Road, making off with a small amount of cash from inside.

Talkin Heads, on High Street West, was a target for burglars between 5pm on Tuesday and 9am yesterday. A window was again smashed at the premises and a quantity of cash and a lap top were stolen.

Istanbul Barbers, on Newbottle Street, Houghton, was broken into between 6pm on Tuesday and 9am yesterday.

Hairdressing equipment plus a laptop and cash were stolen from the premises. Police said officers will now be visiting business premises to offer security advice.

Superintendent Jim Napier, from Sunderland Area Command, said: “While we are carrying out extra patrols to prevent any further burglaries to commercial, we are calling on business owners to help us by taking simple measures to safeguard their property.”
