Police have arrested a man who went on the run after being convicted of causing or allowing the death of a child.

Officers arrested Paul Nicholson in the Byker area of Newcastle at around 1:35pm today. He is currently in police custody.

Twenty-year-old Paul Nicholson, from Gateshead, was convicted by a jury at Newcastle Crown court at the beginning of the week, but failed to appear. He is due to be sentenced on Thursday.

Police had put out a regional appeal for anyone who had seen him, or knew where he might be, to contact police.

In the appeal, Chief Inspector Steve Ammari had said: "Paul Nicholson was not present at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday and there is a warrant out for his arrest. The last confirmed sighting we have of him is from December 8 and we want to hear from anyone who has seen or heard from his since that date to contact us as soon as possible.

"Because of the circumstances surrounding Nicholson's disappearance then we are keen to locate him as soon as possible and I'd urge anyone with any information that could help us locate him to get in touch."
