A GRENADE has been discovered in a Sunderland street.

Residents were urged to stay in their homes after the small, hand-held bomb was discovered in Wetherby Road, Grangetown, this morning.

Police were called to the scene at 11.20am after the grenade was found in a garage.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “Neighbouring properties were visited by officers and residents advised to stay indoors while an assessment of the grenade, which had been in the garage for over 30 years, took place. A cordon was also put in place.

“A bomb disposal unit has attended the scene and removed the item for disposal.”
