A TAXI driver is being sought after a passenger’s mobile phone was stolen in an altercation over a fare.

The woman, in her 20s, asked to be dropped off at a relation’s house in Chester-le-Street to pick up cash, after telling the driver she did not have enough money to pay.

The driver refused, locked the doors and demanded the woman’s mobile phone as payment.

She got out of the taxi in the town and continued to row with the driver.

He drove off with her mobile phone.

The taxi was a dark saloon, which had picked her up at the Bigg Market, Newcastle, at about midnight on April 8.

Detective Constable Rachael Austin said: “We’ve carried out a number of enquiries, but still need to trace any witnesses.”

Anyone with information should contact Durham police on 101.
