A THIEF’S sweet-smelling plan turned sour when he attempted to steal perfume from a supermarket.

Short of cash, Kirk Scott and a pal decided to take bottles of women’s perfume from a Morrison’s store.

Scott, of Tel-el-Kabir Road, Hendon, Sunderland, was spotted walking down the aisles filling his basket with different fragrances.

Suspicious of the amount of perfume they were carrying, security guards followed Scott and his female friend on CCTV as they made their way around the shop in Jarrow, South Tyneside.

In one aisle, they saw Scott, 30, cut the security tags off the boxes and put them in a bag.

When he tried to leave, staff gave chase and caught up with him outside.

He had split from the woman who went into the store’s toilets.

At South Tyneside Magistrates Court this week Scott pleaded guilty to theft.

Sarah Guest, prosecuting, said: “He had a large quantity of perfume in the basket and because of that staff were suspicious.

“They watched him cut the tags and try to leave the store.

“When security staff tried to stop him he started to run away and got to a nearby pub where they caught up with him and detained him until police arrived.”

Magistrates sent the case to Newcastle Crown Court to be sentenced.

He will appear at the court at a date yet to be decided and was remanded in custody until then.
