A PENSIONER was mugged as she made her way along a footpath.

The 69-year-old was pushed to the ground from behind as she walked along a footpath between North Hylton Road and Redcar Road.

She was left badly shaken and suffered bruising to her knee and a small cut to her hand during the incident in which her handbag was grabbed.

It contained cash, a mobile phone and house keys.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened between 8.20pm and 8.40pm on December 23.

Detectives are particularly keen to hear from a 17-year-old girl walking along the footpath in the opposite direction to the victim just before the incident. She was wearing a green top and grey leggings and talking on her mobile as she passed the woman.

Acting Det Sgt Ian Callaghan, of Sunderland Area Command CID, said: “I must stress, we want to trace this young girl purely as a witness.”

 Witnesses should call 101, ext 69191, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
