FIRE crews were called to rescue a 97-year-old woman from a home after yobs sparked a blaze in a wheelie-bin.
Two crews from Peterlee fire station were called to tackle the fire in Jude Place after the wheelie-bin was set alight.
Residents reported being able to see the blaze from streets away.
The bin, which was at the back of the property, caused significant damage to doors and windows of the pensioner’s home.
One crew member put out the fire at the back of the house, while another went into the property to get the stricken pensioner out by breaking in through the front door.
She had to be treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation, but escaped without serious injuries.
An investigation is now under way into the cause of the fire, which is being treated as suspicious.
The fire took place at about 10pm yesterday.
