A PENSIONER has appeared in court to face sex crimes dating back more than three decades.

John Suckley, 71, from Newbottle, has been charged with eight offences of sexual assault on a schoolgirl, who was under 14 when the first alleged attack took place.

Suckley is said to have assaulted the girl between December 1979 and December 1994.

All eight charges involve the same victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Appearing at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court, Suckley withheld his pleas. Paul Anderson, prosecuting, asked magistrates to send the case to Newcastle Crown Court.

They agreed and Suckley, of Grangeview, was granted unconditional bail until a hearing at the crown court on April 16.
