A CAMPAIGN to ward off thieves who target cars has been hailed for its good results.
Operation Hawkeye saw residents join police to patrol hotspot areas at Dragonville and Durham City Retail Parks.
During the two-week operation, more than 60 cars were found with valuables such as sat navs, wallets, purses, jewellery and laptop computers openly on display.
The owners have been sent a crime prevention pack which offers advice on keeping valuables and vehicles safe.
Sergeant Jim Cowell, of Durham City Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The advice is simple, don’t leave your valuable on display in your car.
“Either put them out of sight or take them with you.”
