NEARLY 150 police have been axed from the Northumbria force in the last year, new figures have revealed.

Total numbers of officers dropped from 4,130 in 2010 to 3,981 in 2011, a cut of 3.6 per cent.

Durham Police saw a 5.9 per cent fall, from 1,504 to 1,415 last year.

Data released under the Freedom of Information Act showed police forces across England and Wales have shed one in 23 officers, as they battle to balance the books.

Reports have predicted 16,000 would go in England and Wales by 2015.
