THE trial of a man accused of killing his girlfriend because he thought she had been possessed by the devil has been halted.

Daniel Johnson claims he was insane when he strangled and stabbed 24-year-old Gemma Finnigan 12 times at their home in Church View, Boldon Colliery, last September.

The 32-year-old, who denies murder, was being tried by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court.

On the third day of the case, Judge James Goss QC discharged the panel due to legal reasons.

A new trial will be held in November.

Johnson was remanded in custody in the meantime.
