A MURDER inquiry is under way after a man was stabbed to death at a house on Wearside.
Four people were today in police custody after the 52-year-old was left critically wounded during an incident at a family home in Fence Houses.
The victim was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital but died later.
Police were called to the semi-detached property in Avenue Vivian, off Sedgeletch Road, at about 10pm yesterday after they received reports of a stabbing.
Detectives said a 23-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder and three other people were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
The Echo understands that all those involved know each other.
Today, neighbours in the street spoke of their shock over the incident in what is normally a quiet area.
A 32-year-old man who lives in Avenue Vivian, but who didn’t want to be named, said: “You really don’t expect it at all. We just saw the police last night.
“He was a nice fellow and everybody thought he was alive. It was only until this morning that we found out he is dead.”
Another man, who also lives in the street, said: “This morning is the first I’ve heard about it. I can’t believe it.”
A police officer today stood guard over the property, which was sealed off by police tape.
Forensic investigations were also under way in a bid to determine what exactly happened.
