MURDER charges are expected over the killing of Sunderland-born policeman Keith Blakelock in London in 1985.
Detectives have reportedly told his widow Elizabeth Johnson, who lives in West Boldon, they are preparing to bring murder charges against the unnamed suspect within weeks.
Pc Blakelock, 40, was attacked during the Broadwater Farm riots in Tottenham.
He had been trying to protect firefighters dealing with a supermarket blaze, and was stabbed dozens of times.
The alleged attacker was under 18 at the time. He is not one of three people who were originally convicted, who later had them quashed after it was found evidence had been fabricated.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The reinvestigation into the murder of Pc Blakelock is ongoing. Regular consultation with the CPS has been taking place in relation to this case.”
