Motorist charged with drink-driving after car crashes into crossing on Sunderland street

A man has been charged with drink-driving and careless driving following a collision in a Sunderland street.

Northumbria Police was called to the city’s Windsor Terrace on Tuesday, January 21 following reports that a blue Ford Focus had crashed into the street’s pedestrian crossing.

A force spokesman confirmed to the Echo that no other vehicles were involved in the incident, which happened at around 2.40pm, and nobody was injured.

The driver of the Focus, a 28-year-old man, was arrested at the scene by officers.

The police spokesman added in a statement: “The 28-year-old driver was arrested for driving whilst above the legal alcohol limit.

“He has since been charged with that offence, and a second charge of careless driving

“The man will appear before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, February 18.”
