Mob hurls rocks and eggs at police after setting fire to motorbike during Sunderland disturbance

An inquiry is under way after police officers and residents were pelted with rocks and eggs during a street disturbance.

Northumbria Police are now studying camera footage of the incident – labelled “absolutely shocking” by one onlooker – and insist: “This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and those responsible will be dealt with swiftly and robustly.”

The attack started after officers were alerted to a car window getting smashed by yobs in School Road, East Rainton, on the edge of Sunderland, last Saturday.

They discovered on arriving that a motorbike had also been torched.

A force spokesperson said: “An investigation has been launched following anti-social behaviour and criminal damage in East Rainton over the weekend.

“Shortly after 2pm on Saturday, January 9, we received a report that a window of a parked car had been smashed by a group of males on School Road, East Rainton.

“When attending the scene, officers also found a motorbike had been set on fire in the street before the group began to throw rocks and eggs at emergency service personnel and residents.

“This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and those responsible will be dealt with swiftly and robustly."

One onlooker, who asked not to be named, said: “Seeing these events unfold in front of you is absolutely shocking in itself.”

No-one is believed to have been seriously injured.

The force spokesperson added: "Inquiries are ongoing into the disturbance and officers are monitoring footage of the incident to identify those involved.
