A MILKMAN who fiddled more than £77,000 in benefits has been told he faces custody.

Shorn Smith, 49, formerly of Dalby Grove, Murton, appeared at Durham Crown Court for sentence after admitting nine charges of failing to notify a change of circumstances and making a false statement.

Chris Morrison, defending, said: “There is no pre-sentence report because since this offending he has split with his wife and is now living in a caravan in the dairy yard.

“This meant he did not receive the letters from the Probation Service.

“They have agreed to see him later this month, if the court will allow him the opportunity.”

Judge Stephen Ashurst told Smith: “I am prepared to give you another chance to see the Probation Service,” and adjourned sentencing until September 3.
