Metro windows smashed

VANDALS hurled stones at a passing Metro, smashing two windows.

The attack caused the train, which was travelling from Newcastle Airport to South Hylton, to come to a halt after stones were thrown from Wadley Lane footbridge, heading towards Fellgate station.

Pc Graham Marshall said: “The damage was so severe and, for their own safety, passengers had to be removed from the train as it was taken out of service.”

Officers carried out a search of the area but were unable to find anyone after the attack, which took place at about 7.20pm on Monday.

Pc Marshall added: “Unfortunately a train had to be taken out of service, but we have been lucky here – no passengers or Metro staff were injured.

“The potential consequences these vandals could have caused is unbelievable.

“We’ve made a number of inquiries into the incident and I would warn students at schools in the area of the potential dangers of playing near the railway and obstructing trains.

“Parents and adults must also take responsibility to emphasise the dangers to your children.”
