A Metro ticket inspector was headbutted after he asked a group of people with no tickets to leave a train, a court was told.

Scott Appleby, 21, attacked Chris Ogle, who was checking tickets on board a Metro train late on June 5, Sunderland magistrates heard.

Prosecutor Glenda Beck said Mr Ogle came across Appleby who was in a group of people which included a woman with a pushchair, neither of whom had a ticket.

“He asked them to leave at the next stop, St Peter’s, and got off the train and onto the platform to hold the train,” Ms Beck said the defendant then swore and was shouting and waving his arms around before he headbutted the inspector in the face.

Appleby, of Ferndale Terrace, Pallion, admitted assault.

Steven Chambers, defending, said there was no evidence of any physical contact. Appleby will be sentenced on August 6.
