Men arrested after theft from car at traffic lights in Houghton

POLICE have arrested a man following a theft from a car that was standing at traffic lights in Houghton.

The theft happened between 8.40pm and 8.50pm on Tuesday, December 9, when a man approached a stationary car at the traffic lights on Front Street, Fencehouses, opened one of the doors and stole a bag from the back seat.

A second incident happened at 8.55pm on Friday, December 12, when a man opened the front door of a car waiting at the same set of traffic lights on Front Street and tried to steal a handbag from the lap of the passenger.

After a struggle, the offender made off empty handed towards Mulberry park.

He is described as being a young, white male, of slim build and was wearing a black tracksuit and a woolly beanie hat.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft and is currently in police custody.
