A hungry thief helped himself to £53 worth of meat from a Sunderland supermarket.
John Duggan, 43, took five joints of meat from Tesco Extra at Roker Retail Park on May 27, Sunderland magistrates heard.
Prosecutor Angela Narey said Duggan, of St Leonard Street, Hendon, was seen stashing the goods inside a carrier bag.
He was then apprehended by staff on his way out of the store. Duggan later admitted theft.
Tony Southwick, defending, said: “There is no indication of the type of meat, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t horse meat as per Mr Duggan’s instructions. He was having a bit of a mare and ended up feeling like a donkey.”
Duggan was sentenced to a conditional discharge for six months.
He was also told to pay £85 costs, £150 criminal courts charge and a £15 surcharge.
