A COUPLE have been left terrified after a hammer-wielding thug smashed his way into their home.
Shocked neighbours today described seeing the masked man force his way into the Hendon property.
The raider then confronted the couple at their Ridley Terrace home, threatening them before an altercation broke out, with the householder left injured.
Residents in the street saw the masked man armed with a hammer repeatedly striking the front door and window of the property at about 9pm on Thursday.
One man said: “There was a man came masked up and started smashing the door in, then the window.
“That’s all I saw.
“I locked my door and called the police.
“It makes you nervous because it was so violent.”
Another neighbour said: “We were just watching the football and then bang, bang, bang.
“I thought it was just kids messing around and then I saw a man smashing a window in.
“I didn’t sleep last night. I was shaking all night.
“I’ve been absolutely shaking like a leaf all day.”
The injured man was taken to hospital, although he is not thought to have been in a serious condition.
Detectives today told the Echo they had arrested a 48-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated burglary.
Officers are appealing for information in relation to the incident.
Detective Sergeant Jim McErlane said: “At this stage, we believe the people in this incident are known to each other. No one was seriously injured and a man has been arrested.”

Neighbourhood Inspector for Hendon, Jamie Southwell, said: “We’re working with the local community to offer them support and reassurance and will have extra officers in the area to answer any concerns residents may have.”
The terrifying ordeal came just a day after a Washington home was raided by knife-wielding thugs.
A couple in Moorside, Albany, were held up at knifepoint by three men who smashed into their home and took a number of items. While they were left unharmed, the man and woman were left badly shaken.
