Police are hunting a man after a woman was raped in a city park.

Officers received a report on Wednesday that a 41-year-old woman had been raped in Mowbray Park between 1am and 2am.

Detectives are keen to trace a man who was with the woman prior to the incident.

He is described as 5ft 8 inches tall, medium build, with short dark receding hair. He was wearing a Miami skyline printed T-Shirt, dark jeans and trainers. He had a watch on his left wrist and a tattoo on his left forearm and upper arm.

Extra patrols are being carried out throughout the park to offer reassurance to people.

Southern Area Command Chief Inspector Dave Willett said: “We know the impact incidents such as this can have on our communities and I’d like to reassure local residents that extra officers will be on patrol throughout the weekend.

“In addition, we have worked closely with the local authority to ensure lighting and security in the park. That being said, we know people will be concerned, our enquiries into this incident are on-going and we’re doing everything we can to trace the offender.

“I would ask anyone who has any information, whether they were in or around the park, or know who the person responsible is to come forward and speak to us. Any information could be crucial to our enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191 quoting reference 352 080915 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
