Man who suffered head injuries in Sunderland attack remains critical

A MAN injured in an assault outside a seafront hotel today remains in a critical condition.

 The 48-year-old victim, who is understood to be from the Whitburn area, was allegedly attacked by another man outside the Roker Hotel, Roker Terrace, at about 1.20am last Sunday.

 He was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital having sustained serious head injuries.

 After an assessment by medics, his condition was deemed life-threatening and he was today described as still being “critical, but stable”.

 The incident is understood to have been witnessed by a number of people in the area at the time.

 Rhys Iles, 28, of George Scott Street, South Shields, appeared before Sunderland magistrates last week charged with malicious wounding in connection with the incident.  

 He was granted conditional bail.

 The case will be heard at Newcastle Crown Court this month.
