A SERIAL thief found himself back in court after stealing a £1 sandwich.
Steven Devlin took the ham sandwich from a Poundland store and ate it, Sunderland Magistrates’ Court heard.
“Staff saw Mr Devlin acting suspiciously near the food display in the store in High Street East,” said Glenda Beck, prosecuting.
“He was seen to tuck the sandwich into his jacket and leave without paying for it.
“He was identified from CCTV footage.
“When interviewed by police, Mr Devlin admitted stealing the sandwich and eating it.
“He has 31 convictions for theft and kindred offences.”
Devlin, of Swan Lodge, High Street East, admitted theft on November 20.
Jason Smith, defending, said Devlin was given a suspended sentence earlier this month for a number of theft offences.
He added: “It is another theft, but it was only a £1 sandwich.”
The magistrates gave Devlin an absolute discharge.
