Man taken to hospital and two arrested on suspicion of GBH following suspected Sunderland assault

A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after a man was hospitalised with head injuries.

Officers were called to a suspected assault on Gleneagles Road, Sunderland, in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, May 27).

A 31-year-old man was found with multiple, non life-threatening head injuries and was taken to hospital. He has since been discharged.

Two people, a 42-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man, remain in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident.

Witnesses say they heard a commotion in the early hours of the morning.

A police cordon remained in place at the scene in Gleneagles Road this morning but has now been removed.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly before 2.30am today, we were alerted by the ambulance service to a suspected assault on Gleneagles Road, Sunderland.

“Officers attended and found a man with multiple non-life threatening head injuries. He was taken to hospital and has since been discharged.

“An investigation has been launched into the incident and officers have arrested a 42-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. They remain in police custody and are assisting with our enquiries.
