A MAN has was taken to hospital with serious injuries after an early morning assault today.

A large section of Church Street in Seaham remained cordoned off today as police work to determine the exact cause of the incident which has left the man with head injuries.

The incident is understood to have happened near the Oddfellow Arms pub.

Witnesses say the man was left injured after a group began fighting at about 2am today.

Police confirmed today another man had been arrested in relation to the incident.

One man, who did not want to be identified, said: “There was a large number of people fighting. The ambulance came and one guy was taken to James Cook Memorial Hospital because his head injuries were too serious to go to Sunderland Royal.

“I think a lot of people had been drinking.”

The injured man was today described as being in a “stable” condition.

One Church Street worker aid: “I came into work at 7.30am this morning and I could see hair, blood and money all over the place.

“Saturday is normally the shop’s good day and this isn’t going to do the street any good. Things are bad enough without people fighting like this.”
