Man suffered head injuries in derby day attack

A MAN is continuing to recover from head injuries after he was attacked following Sunderland’s derby day win over Newcastle.

The 24-year-old was assaulted outside the Mallard pub in Stockton Road, Seaham, at 6.30pm on Sunday, April 14, just hours after the Black Cats’ 3-0 victory over their Tyneside rivals.

Officers dealing with the investigation have now appealed for witnesses as the inquiry into the fracas moves forward.

The victim, who lives in Seaham, was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment after he was hurt in the disturbance.

He has since been released and is recovering at home from his injuries.

Detectives today appealed for anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area around the pub at the time to get in touch.

l A 26-year-old Seaham man has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

He has been bailed by police, pending further inquiries.
